Millfield Senior School has won both the Girls and Mixed team events at the prestigious Team Tennis Schools Senior Students Finals 2017.
The Somerset school claimed the titles by defeating Shropshire’s Ellesmere College in both finals. The triumphant Girls team included Jasmine Olds, Jodie Thomas, Anna Rogers and Pippa Chatikavanij. Jasmine and Pippa also played alongside Orlando Ely and Max Jenkins in the winning Mixed team.
Nicholas Jones, performance tennis coach at Millfield School, said: “The Senior Students Competition is a great event that gives some of our pupils a chance to play on a national stage, which they wouldn’t otherwise have. Everyone’s attitude during the event – on and off court – was a credit to themselves and the school, and they should be very proud of what they have achieved.”
Matt Byford, Competition Manager at the Lawn Tennis Association, added: “The Senior Students Competition is an important part of the Team Tennis Schools Series which sees over 1,500 young people aged 16-19 playing Team Tennis. The Finals were very successful with all 24 teams who qualified playing some excellent tennis throughout the weekend. Congratulations to Millfield School for claiming both the Girls and Mixed titles.”
Truro and Penwith College in Cornwall were winners in the Boys event at the National Finals held at Bolton Arena. It was the first time a Boys team had successfully defended the title.
Team Tennis Schools is a free competition for all schools and colleges in England, Scotland and Wales and gives players a chance to represent their school or college in a competitive, team environment. Teams in the Senior Students competition progress from League to Knockout Stages and then onto the National Finals.
