Becky High schoolgirls celebrated top spot wins this month, by all three age groups in the county round of the National Schools netball competition. Despite heavy rain making playing conditions tricky, all three teams overcame tough opposition, winning every single match, to qualify for the regional round of this major netball tournament for all English schools.
The teams had a great run in 2015, where Beaconsfield High School’s U19 and U16 teams qualified for National Finals with the U16 winning a Bronze Medal and the ‘Best Defence’ trophy. The U12 reached the quarter finals and U13 the finals of the School Sport Magazine National Cup. The coaches are confident that this weekend’s performance puts the teams in a strong position to compete for the national championships in 2016. They’ll be following a strong Becky High tradition with teams having won the national competition on more than one occasion, regularly competing strongly against some of the best sporting state and independent schools in the country.
Netballers are getting a big boost at Becky High this month with a £30,000 investment to resurface the three floodlit outdoor courts. The courts will also be available to the local community for hire. Zeo, former sponsors of the England netball team, have made a generous donation to the school in acknowledgement of its elite level of netball, with the remaining funds raised from other companies and the Friends of Beaconsfield High.
Along with the rest of the school, Mrs Rachel Smith, BHS Headteacher, was delighted at the wins, commenting; “The girls playing in the teams at the weekend should be very proud of their achievement. Their performance underpins the great sporting legacy of Beaconsfield High School. As well as investing in the pastoral, creative and academic development of our girls, we strongly believe in the importance of a broad spectrum of sport being played at all levels. Under Ms Priestley, our dedicated Head of PE , we are seeing continued high national and regional performances in netball, hockey , gymnastics, swimming and athletics. With our intake of girls increasing in September 2016, Beaconsfield High School will have an additional 30 spaces for qualifying girls, meaning that 180 year 7 students will have the benefit of the new netball facilities and the coaching and traditions of netballing and sporting excellence.”
